A Deeper History of the Origins of The Alaskan Husky
Husky Wear

A study in progress, By Stephanie Little Wolf

For the purposes of this paper I have used the term Alaskan Husky to refer to any animal of husky looks, born and bred in Alaska to pull in harness, with its genetic history primarily founded by Alaskan Native Dogs, from either or both interior village bloodlines or coastal Eskimo dog bloodlines.

I use the term sled dog to describe any dog that pulls in harness for any application and racing sled dogs to describe any dog bred specifically for speed and endurance, used to compete in sled dog races. This terminology may or may not be shared by other mushers.

Most people I have been around simply refer to sled dogs as sled dogs and then later in the conversation it becomes more specific about types, bloodlines and usage. Most sled dogs in Alaska are a conglomeration of Alaskan Husky and other breeds that have been added and selected for what ever use a particular musher has.

Husky Wear

The Alaskan Husky
My descriptions and analysis of the history of the Alaskan Husky probably differs from many articles of late. It is based less on modern racers opinions and knowledge of the modern history of sled dog racing, (which is readily available in numerous publications), and instead is more focused on an interest in and study of the early history and prehistory of Alaskan dogs. This complex topic is consistently left out of, or skipped over with a brief word or single sentence, in discussions concerning the beginnings of our sled dogs here in Alaska. The simple fact is however, that native dogs have been here in Alaska for thousands of years, and they form the genetic base of our modern Alaskan Husky.

The history of the Alaskan Husky starts in no other place than prehistory, that is, the vast time before Europeans and Russians came to North America, and with the Native Village Dogs that once populated this region. Indeed, no discussion of Alaskan dogs would be complete without at least the mention of Pre-Columbian Native Dogs in North America, of which there were a huge variety of size, description, and type. Several careful scientists are at work to understand the nature of this aspect of prehistory. Prominent researchers are, R.K.Wayne, Jennifer Leonard, Susan Janet Crockford, Juliet Clutton-Brock Marion Shwartz, N. Nakarmura, Stanley Olsen, Roe, Caries Vila, Peter Savolainen, and many others. Their areas of study cover many disciplines: Anthropology, Archeology, Archeozoology, Migration, Biology and Genetic research.

Tal Tan Bear Dogs

At one time indigenous dogs were numerous on this continent. Dogs were of all sizes and descriptions. There were everything from the small Innu Canoe Hunting Dogs, to Salish Wool dogs who were specially bred for their wool, which was harvested for blankets and clothing, to hunting Tal Tan Bear Dogs, small enough to fit inside your parka. In addition to these smaller native dogs, common Indian or village dogs were found all over North and South America, of which the Alaskan Village dogs were a northerly version. At the end of this article, please see a list of wonderful books and museum papers that one can read as resources for further study.

Coastal Eskimo Dogs, and the Alaskan Interior Village dogs, are the two largest groups of native dogs that make up the base of the Alaska Husky. Both are descended from pre-Columbian dogs which crossed the Bering Straits in wave after wave of migration with pre-columbian peoples starting as early as 14,000 years ago or before. Indeed, scientists have determined that the Bering Land Bridge was intact both 35,00 years ago and 20,000 years ago. These hardy animals were fully domesticated dogs according to recent DNA research and were primarily descended from central or east Asian wolves, although some genetic studies show that certain native dogs were isolated for extreme periods of time and may have evolved from or mixed with local wolf populations of which they shared a genetic heritage. (1)

Dogs were crucial in varying degrees to many tribal groups across North America, and were used for many important tasks, such as packing heavy loads in the summer, and dragging supplies on snow in the winter as the nomadic peoples of Alaska traversed from place to place. Dogs were also used for hunting and tracking. Dogs were companions and babysitters, as well as early warning systems for bears, enemies, or other forms of danger. Most nomadic peoples did not selectively breed these dogs unless unwanted puppies were culled for a variety of reasons. (2) Like most nomadic tribal peoples, castration was not practiced until the turn of the century, and selection was based on need, not looks.

As sledding technology made its way into the interior regions, tribal peoples began to hunt, trap, fish, and race with dogs that pulled sleds. They began to breed dogs purposely that could run faster for village races, although the dogs still had to work and hunt as well. The dogs looked like huskies, well furred up and strong-but not the fox like Siberians. Some regions had more of a larger dog and others had smaller more slender or rangy animals. Natural selection was still very much in place. Coastal village or Eskimo dogs were robust, heavy boned, and could survive on little food and very little water. At times they were only fed in winter, and left free to care for themselves in summer, sometimes kept on islands and fed only occasionally. They had tightly curled tails, large heads, and thick well furred coats. They were and are to this day capable of terrific feats of strength, helping to haul large chunks of whales across the sea ice to be further butchered. These were the types of dog that were witnessed by explorer Martin Forbisher in 1577, and later in 1897 by Fridtjof Nansen. (3)

Interior dogs sometimes had short half or broom tails, were of a more slender or rangy nature than Eskimo dogs. Unlike dogs of the lower forty eight, they were photographed briefly before becoming totally amalgamated by European and Siberian breeds. Some of these photos can be viewed on VILDA, the Alaskan digital archive of museum photographs. It is also helpful to research the Horse Creek Mary image, as this photograph from the turn of the century depicts two wonderful examples of Interior (Atnha) Village dogs. Although Coastal Eskimo dogs have been preserved in today’s Inuit sled dog, Canadian Eskimo dog, and Greenlander- the Interior Village dogs are a thing of the past. It would take an extensive and prolonged archeological and accompanying genetic study to determine just how much original strain remains in any of today’s Alaskan Village dogs, as outside dog breeds came to Alaska during the Gold rush and have added to the Alaskan Husky make up. Miners tried their hand at copying the Eskimo dog as they became more in demand by breeding the Saint Bernard and Newfoundland to captive female wolves. The results were not probably what they expected as most high content hybrids would rather work out the pecking order than work as a team. Any Large dog that could pull a load was added to the mix. Lots of people came to Alaska during the gold rush, bringing and breeding dogs for hauling huge loads of supplies. Mail run dogs were also kept for hauling the mail, up to 700 lb loads of mail were pulled by dogs. Indeed, they had to be hardy.

Siberian Husky was added to much of the Interior Alaskan dog population when Leonard Seppala with his Siberian imports, entered the scene. These dogs were fast and racy compared to the larger slower Eskimo dogs and other large mixed breed dogs, and the new dogs became popular for their hardiness, happy natures and hard work ethic. Continuing with Roland Lombard in the 1920’s and 30’s, racing with Siberians became all the rage, and many of these dogs were taken to villages and mixed with the native village dogs. Like the Alaskan Malamute, eventually Siberian Huskies became the product of closed stud books and ridged AKC standards. Today, one can still see strong Siberian blood in many Alaskans, as those lines continue to be favored by some mushers. In addition to AKC Siberian Huskies, Racing Seppala Siberians are sometimes favored by sprint mushers, or simply a part of the genetic heritage of their racing dogs. Its ironic that those dogs have now become inbred to the point that some Seppala breeders are now backcrossing with Alaskan Huskies.

Hounds, pointers, and Irish Setters were experimented with early on. One can view photographs of the famous «Balto» to see an example of an early mixed breed husky-hound or pointer racing dog. He certainly resembles some of the racing dogs of today. All of these breeds made their way to villages in Alaska, and into to the village dogs that remained.

Racing Sled Dogs
All of these dogs also made their way into toady’s racing sled dog, a mix of the evolving village dog along with its famous Siberian background, have continued to receive admixtures of greyhound as big mid distance and distance racing experienced resurgence in Alaska in the 1970’s.

Now days Pointer and even Saluki have been experimented with in racing kennels. The new Eurohound is a choice for many sprint mushers. A Eurohound is a cross between an Alaskan Husky and German Short haired Pointer. This cross first successfully entered the competitive sled dog racing world in Scandinavia. It is one of the most formidable racing dogs in the world, combining the husky’s centuries-honed sledding ability and a pointer’s enthusiasm and athleticism. I have also seen Border Collies and other breeds added recently.

Husky Wear
Egil Ellis with his team of Scandinavian Hounds winning the World Cup in Ostersund, Sweden, 1998

I have mixed feelings about the racing Alaskan sled dogs of today, some of them for me fall into no husky category whatsoever. Some who race sprint dogs prefer a pure bred pointer altogether. Many racing bloodlines in Alaska have become extremely inbred, as famous dogs who make names for themselves are voraciously sought after for their fast genes. Racing dogs in Alaska are all related to certain dogs such as Lingo, Sailor, Scotty, or Riker, to name just a few. Its not clear to me whether or not the recent pointer and other breeds admixture have simply somewhat alleviated the inbreeding hazards in Alaskan dogs or if those breeds have really improved upon the overall integrity of racing dogs.

What is lost and what is gained for the dogs? Short coats and a different personality, lack of toughness of bone structure, quality of feet, inability to live outside and withstand cold etc. are some of the problems I have had related to me from some mushers, in associated with breeding in European bloodlines for speed alone. Some mushers complain of a lack of mental toughness as well. Some sled dog racing kennels have to keep their dogs inside a heated barn and the animals have to wear coats when they run. I have also witnessed many, many dogs at the local sprint track picking up their feet, as they shiver to keep them warm one at a time. They may love to run, but they certainly don’t enjoy the climate! Still other dogs who have managed to retain some sort of coat, seem to do fine in the far north chill. Whatever bloodlines they sport, whether distance or sprint, racing sled dogs are the best at what they do, and they do it magnificently. Some of them are huskies and some are not, some are a carefully blended mix that just wants to run, run, and run.

All Alaskan Huskies share certain qualities, many of them still do fall primarily into the Husky category, occasionally evenHusky Wear resembling the village dogs. They all are an amazing lot of dogs living in an amazing environment with an unusual lot of dog lovers who love to hit the trail and get a run in. They leap and bark, scream and lunge into their harnesses. I tend to prefer dogs who resemble Village Dogs as much as possible, especially from the great Yukon River villages, from both here in Alaska and in British Columbia. Now days its rare to hear a musher exclaim that a dog is «Villagey» or, an Native Elder tell me that a dog is «Old Timey». Those old dogs were really something in their ability to work in a variety of different applications. And they were indigenous to this great land. An animal shaped by great amounts of time and isolation, which was still the product of natural selection, an animal that tribal people and nature had already perfected for this extreme climate and cultural life. I strive to protect that ideal in my dogs, how much I am succeeding would take a detailed genetic and archeological study. Meanwhile, I really enjoyed Mary Shields description of the Alaskan Husky best, and it goes something like this: The Alaskan sled dog,(Husky), is a conglomeration of bloodlines constantly evolving to meet to the evolving needs of the mushers who breed them. Sequences from both dogs and wolves showed considerable diversity and supported the hypothesis that wolves were the ancestors of dogs. Most dog sequences belonged to a divergent monophyletic clade sharing no sequences with wolves. The sequence divergence within this clade suggested that dogs originated more than 100,000 years before the present. Associations of dog haplotypes with other wolf lineages indicated episodes of admixture between wolves and dogs. Repeated genetic exchange between dog and wolf populations may have been an important source of variation for artificial selection.)

«Кровосток», «Скотогетто», соцреализм и открытие катка в парке Горького

Куда пойти на выходных: четыре больших рэп-концерта от Wu-Tang Clan до Оксимирона, выставка соцреализма, на которую стоят очереди, триллер с Кеану Ривзом, ярмарка Foodiez и большой фестиваль премии «Просветитель».

«Кто там»

Две юные красотки мучают Кеану Ривза

Husky Wear

Husky Wear

Фотография: Premium Film

Husky Wear

«This is Puppy aka Puppy-Dog. I know, very original huh? We named him Bear, however, never stopped calling him Puppy. The name stuck for the rest of his life. He was a Husky / Shepherd mix. He was rescued from the pound when he was about 6 months old, on his last day. When we brought him home he got car sick. We also later discovered he had epilepsy. He was as cute as a button. We figured his original owners didn’t want to deal with his seizures. Puppy was a very friendly dog. He loved everyone. He liked to chase cats, but did well with our own cat. His temperament was predominately Husky. He chewed many things up well into his middle-aged years and only got better about it when he was about 5 or 6 years old. He howled like a wolf at the fire siren that would go off in our town about once a week and howled at any other type of whistle. When he was happy, he talked to us in a howling voice. He was a major escape artist. He could scale the new cedar 4-foot fence we put up for him in a single bound. He loved to wander. If we were right there with him, he’d listen and stay, so long as we were watching. If we walked away, or if he got out when we were not aware, he would wander off. Puppy lived until he was 13 years old until he unfortunately got hit by a car on one of his many great escapes.»

Other Names
  • Husky Shepherd
  • Shepsky
  • Siberian Shepherd

The Gerberian Shepsky is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the German Shepherd and the Siberian Husky. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. Not all of these designer hybrid dogs being bred are 50% purebred to 50% purebred. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses.

Hank, aka Hankeedoodle the German Shepherd / Husky mix breed dog at 1 year old—«I didn’t know much about him got him from the animal shelter. He was abused and spoiled at the same time. He is very protective and guards us well. He senses if a person is good or evil and if they are evil he will defend and attack. He is quite the hunter as well. We had an adventure at 3am with a possum. He is relentless. He is still looking for a mouse that got away in the kitchen. I haven’t seen a dog with his markings. The speckles he has are as unique as his blue eye.»

Husky Wear

Meeka the Gerberian Shepsky as a puppy at 6 months old—«I have watched the Dog Whisperer, and many of his methods had helped me a few years ago, and did educate me a lot more on reading canine behavior. We have 4 dogs, 3 males (2 Neutered 1 intact -show dog) and 1 female (spayed) and we have an established “pack” order. In fact with what I had learned form Ceasar Millan, we had an extremely smooth transition when I intorduced my new born son to my dogs, compared to the introduction of my first child. We apply some of his philosophies, and the ones we had applied have helped us and educated us on canine behavior, and keeping a more balanced and happier dogs. Of course there is always room for improvement, but I am very happy with my pack, and they in return seem the same.»

Husky Wear

Meeka the Gerberian Shepsky at 6 months old—«We had just lost our Siberian Husky a year before we came across an add in the classifieds for German Shepherd Husky mix puppies. Her father was a German Line bred German Shepherd and mom was a petite red and white husky, both very pretty and all the pups had deep blue eyes! I picked her out because she had the prettiest facial markings and was the easiest to roll over and submissive enough but confident. She’s now a querky hyper loving dog. A pure joy and a headache all in one! Love her bunches!»

Husky Wear

Meeka the Gerberian Shepsky as a puppy at 2 years old—«We got Meeka when she was about 4 weeks old, the people that had her were anxious to get rid of her, they were German Shepherd breeders, and her litter was an accident, they felt it made their establishment look bad. She is a doll, she adores my other dogs, Collie, Boxer and Boston Terrier. She is very good with my children, 1 and 5 years, her gentle disposition with them seems to come naturally for her. She has a lot of stamina, a lot of go and is so much fun to be around — she is my walking buddy, we go for miles! In this picture she is 6 months old and recently spayed. She has the German Shepherd body, tail, feet, and ears, but displays the husky size, legs and head, and of course the eyes! She seems to be a lovely combination of both breeds. At 6 months of age, I believe she is as balanced as a 6 month old puppy can be, I know we still have some obstacles ahead of us, but she has a high drive to please, very submissive to her fellow dog-mates, and extremely gentle with my children.»

Raiya the Gerberian Shepsky at 1 year old—«Raiya would fall under the «Gerberian Shepsky» hybrid here, but I have always called her a Siberian Shepherd, Husky-Shepherd or German Husky. At one year old she is 22 inches tall at the highest point of her back and weighs 55 pounds but is still growing. Her mother was a purebred working type sable German Shepherd and her father was a purebred black and white Siberian Husky. She also had three siblings; a light sable sister with bi-eyes (one blue and one brown), a cream-colored sister with brown eyes and a black and white brother who looked like a purebred Siberian with brown eyes. Raiya’s unusual color is called ‘dirty faced’ Sable Agouti. A few people have somehow mistaken her for a wolfdog, but her mother has not been related to one for around a hundred years when the GSD first originated from being bred back to the wolfdogs, however, she is named after Mariah, a beautiful and very loving low-content wolfdog whom my family had when I was a child. Raiya shares many of the great qualities of her namesake. She is a clever, affectionate, playful and energetic girl who loves to run and roughhouse with the other dogs. She enjoys loving on «her» cats, and she is gentle enough to happily allow even tiny kittens to share her dinner right out of her bowl as she eats. She is very social but seems to be a good judge of character; slathering certain people (including many total strangers) with her hyperactive adoration, while remaining watchful and reserved with others who are more questionable, entirely at her own discretion. She has the outgoing nature of the husky combined with the versatility of the shepherd: an excellent and very unique mix. Raiya truly is an amazing dog.»

HiXael (Xael) the Gerberian Shepsky at 1 year old—«I got Xael when he was three months old from a «rescue» that had «wolf hybrids.» Not being educated, I believed her. I had rescued my other dog Snow from the same place, who was also mistaken for a wolfdog. I got Xael being told he was «97% Timber Wolf and 3% Malamute.» He was neither. He’s Husky and German Shepherd mix. Though he was very, very difficult to handle and manage, I can assure you it was him just being a Husky! Nothing about his behavior was done in a «wolfy» intensity at all but he was VERY destructive. He literally never ran out of energy. Even taking him bikejoring didn’t help! Xael was involved in a hit and run Dec. 11th. I went a couple months in just pure shock and my mental state started to affect my life daily. Before Xael died, and before he was neutered, he had an accidental litter that I didn’t find out were even his until they were already several months old. After his death, one of the owners of his pups gave up their girl of his so I got her, got her fixed, and started rehabilitating her as much needed.»

Moro the Gerberian Shepsky as a puppy—«I got Moro from a litter of 6 pups but I’ve only met one of his brothers. The mother was a Husky and very sweet when we came there. The father is a German Shepherd that we were not able to meet as he was very protective over his pups. Yes, the owners had both the mother and father dog. It was very coincidental that we got Moro. I was looking online for rescue dogs when I saw a 1-year-old Husky/Shepherd mix. I instantly fell in love with it’s beauty and charisma, but when I called the shelter home he was already gone. I than looked up other dogs online on the Dutch equivalent of eBay and found Moro and I picked him up the same evening. Till today I haven’t found another Gerberian Shepsky litter there. Moro is a very sweet dog. Almost never barks. I almost had to teach him how to do it. He is very social. So far he is not showing dominant signs. I walk around 2 hours a day as he definitely has some of the Husky energy. Most of the time he walks freely and he follows me wherever I go. Only sometimes he gets so caught up in playing with other dogs that I have to go get him. It’s nice to see the characters combined. He is watchful around the house but does not express it through barking. He is not very keen on toys. He chooses playing with another dog over a ball or stick anytime. He goes well with every type of dog and is very forgiving. When playing with small dogs he lays down to give them a bit of a fair fight. With larger dogs he loves chasing them, biting them in their neck and paws. When we are in the open field he LOVES to catch mice and moles. Twice he had caught chickens out of the gardens of neighbors and he also loves chasing cats. The cat at home is safe though, he just wants to play with her (but she does not). When he was 12 weeks he fell into a canal nearby and it was only after 10 minutes that I found him. He couldn’t climb back on the concrete sides and was in full panicking mode. Last summer I rehabilitated his fear of drowning by buying him a life jacket and doing swim training for a few days straight. Now he loves to swim and return sticks that I throw in. At 9-months-old he weighed almost 40 kilo’s (88 pounds)! Yup he’s a big fellow! When I walk him on the street he gets A LOT of attention. You can hear everyone talking around you about his bright blue eyes and many people think he is a wolfdog.»

He was from a litter of 6 pups, all male. Sadly, before we got there, two pups had died. Caelum had a hard time his first six months. When we got him, we didn’t know he had Hookworms. We didn’t find out until after his umbilical hernia surgery when he started doing really bad. Thankfully, he is one happy puppy now. Very very hyper. Very loving. He gets along with hismutt pal, Henry.»

«Sadee Mae came to us from a friend of my mom who has an all-white Siberian Husky. She has always naturally done «sit» but we are still, to this day, working on «down.» She likes to lie down and bounce back up like she’s on springs. She has so much energy! She loves the field and the tennis courts near our house; and she loves our walks around the neighborhood to see the other dogs (and strut in front of them because they’re behind the fence and she’s not). She loves to spend time with us, but we can tell she needs a friend because she tries to roughhouse with our cat, Simon, who doesn’t run or play back; he just rubs his face on her. We have found a Border Collie / Lab mix that will be able to keep up with her energy and hopefully wear her out because we’ve tried and failed!»

«This is Cleo. She’s my 4-month-old German Shepherd / Husky mix. She is a very energetic, loyal, loving and comical puppy who loves to dig, fetch, and is very quick to learn all new tricks! She has 2 different coloured eyes. She gets her blue from her Husky mum, and her brown from her German Shepherd dad. She has lots of energy so I give her two 1-hour walks in the morning and at night and she has lots and lots of toys to keep her busy in the house. She is an amazing mix and I love to see the 2 different breeds come out in her personality.»

Cleo the Gerberian Shepsky at 2 years old—«She’s coming out of her puppy chewing stage and is becoming a more loving dog every day. She still loves to dig and can run for miles!! We have a cat now also that she adores and loves cuddles with her before bedtime! She is very clever and can get through any doors, cupboards, fridges and so much more, and will even steal and hide my keys or bag before I go to work in an attempt to stop me leaving. She trains so well and knows more tricks than I can count on my hands! She also picks up on other animal sounds and attempts to copy them, even an Alaskan Malamute’s howl! She loves other dogs adn animals, and even toys; she will mother them all.»

Husky Wear

«This is Lucy, my Siberian Husky / German Shepherd mix. We lovingly call her a «Shushsky.» Lucy turned 2 in December, and is the sweetest dog I’ve ever encountered. She has never met a person she doesn’t like, and loves to give kisses. She is smart, and learns tricks quickly—it only took her about an hour to learn «speak!» Her voice is more of a «Wooooo» than a bark or a howl, and if you talk to her, sometimes she’ll talk back. Lucy’s best friend is Evie, a Bloodhound, who is something of a surrogate mother to her. Lucy is always up for playing with other dogs, people, or just by herself. She has a passion for squeaky toys, and we have several toys that she’s worn the squeaker out of.

«Lucy is still in her puppy stage, but she’s never been a biter or a jumper. Her only bad habit is locking herself in the bathroom by accident—we assume she’s managed to paw the lock shut! She does have a tendency to chase the other dogs, and often she wants to play when they want to rest. She walks very well on a leash, and will even walk beside me off-lead occasionally.»

The US Olympic Team and a bunch of Husky Puppies

by Yalda Walter

Husky Wear

Chas Guldemond working that Million $ smile.

In everyone’s life, there comes a time where maybe, and just maybe, you should say no. You get offered drugs? Say no! You are asked to rob a bank? Say no! You are challenged to do a drag race while under the influence? Say no! It’s suggested that you do a photo shoot with a husky puppy, thus representing your country at the Winter Olympics with these shots? WHAT THE HELL, OF COURSE I’M GONNA DO THIS!

This is us reaching out to the marketing guys behind the US Olympics Team: What did you smoke and please, can you send us some of this over? We’ve had a pretty dull day at the office and are in desperate need of inspiration. Thank you in advance!
